A "Red Ensign" is a traditional naval flag with a red field color and the flag of England/Scotland/Great Britain in the canton (upper left-hand quarter), depending on the century, and often a colonial badge or emblem at centre-right. Several independent nations formerly part of the British Empire have red flags patterned after the Red Ensign.
