Robben Island Museum tours of the island are conducted via the Nelson Mandela Gateway ferry terminal in the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront next to the V&A Waterfront clock tower. The old Robben Island Embarkation Building is a separate Robben Island Museum exhibition site situated at the end of Quay 5 on Jetty 1, diagonally opposite the Nelson Mandela Gateway building and the V&A Waterfront clock tower.

The Robben Island Embarkation Building is the historical transit building once used by the Robben Island Maximum Security Prison. Prisoners were held in this building before being transported to the island by boat and prison staff passed through this building on their way to and from the island. The building dates from the 1970s, and replaced an earlier zinc and iron building on the same site from 1962.
