Roman Charity (Italian Carità Romana; Latin Caritas Romana) is an ancient Roman moral exemplar in which a daughter provides her breast milk to save an aging parent. The best-known version is that of Pero, who secretly breastfeeds her father, Cimon, after he is incarcerated and sentenced to death by starvation.
English: The old man Cimon, after he is incarcerated and sentenced to death by starvation, was saved by his daughter Pero that secretly breastfeeds her aging father. It becomes the symbol of charity.
Italiano: L'autore latino Valerio Massimo ci tramanda il racconto della Caritas Romana. La storia ci parla del vecchio Cimone che era stato condannato a morire di fame in carcere. Solo a sua figlia Pero venne permesso quotidianamente di venire a trovare il padre, ogni volta dopo essere perquisita alla ricerca di eventuali alimenti. La figlia invece riesce a mantenere in vita il padre allattandolo. Quando viene scoperto il fatto, il pretore impressionato da questo grande amore filiale, decide di graziare Cimone ridandogli la libertà. Successivamente sul luogo dove si trovava la prigione fu eretto un tempio in onore della figlia.
Deutsch: Der römischen Autor Valerius Maximus überliefert die Erzählung der »Caritas Romana« (Römische Caritas). Die Geschichte handelt von dem alten Cimon der verurteilt ist im Gefängnis verhungern zu müssen. Nur der jungen Tochter Pero wird täglich der Zutritt erlaubt, nachdem diese gründlich nach Lebensmitteln durchsucht wird. Die Tochter aber reicht dem Vater ihre eigene Brust zum Trinken und bewahrt ihn so vor dem Verhungern. Als das schließlich bekannt wird, begnadigt der Prätor beeindruckt von dieser Tat den alten Cimon und man errichtet der Tochter später einen Tempel, dort wo früher das Gefängnis gestanden hatte.
