The Pilgrim was Saint-Gaudens's 1905 variation on The Puritan (1887). He wrote: "in the Philadelphia work, I changed the features [of the face] completely, giving them the long, New England type, besides altering the folds of the cloak in many respects, the legs, the left hand, and the Bible." The Pilgrim is located in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park, at Kelly & Lemon Hill Drives, opposite Boathouse Row. A replica is at Saint-Gaudens National Historical Site in Cornish, New Hampshire.
