The Imperial Gazetteer of India was first published in 1881 and with a second edition in 1885–87. Later there were 1908/1909 and 1931 "New Editions". First edition was started by Sir William Wilson Hunter (1840-1900) and he also made the second edition.
The "New Editions" was compiled by:
- Sir Herbert Hope Risley (1851-1911)
- William Stevenson Meyer (1860-1922)
- Sir Richard Burn (1871-1947)
- James Sutherland Cotton (1847-1918)
Therefore the 1881 edition, the second edition from 1885-87 and the new edition from 1908/1909 are public domain. The new edition from 1931 may still copyrighted in the US because of the URAA for all new additions made by Sir Richard Burn.
