What is today called the "Thunderhawk" opened in 1924, and for many years was simply called the Dorney Park Roller Coaster.
The Thunderhawk was designed by Herbert Schmeck of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company. The origional ride had an out-and-back design. In 1929 it was reconfigrured to the present figure-8 design. It shortened the length of the ride time, but raised the main lift hill 80 feet and created steeply banked curves. The design change was made to keep competitive with Allentown's Central Park Cyclone roller coaster that opened in 1927. The coaster was painted a bright yellow and the coaster became popularly known as the Dorney Park Coaster or the "Yellow Coaster".
In 1989, the ride was renamed "Thunderhawk" when the park's second wooden roller coaster opened, the "Hercules". In 1996, the entrance building was removed, giving the Thunderhawk its current look.
