English: Underwood & Underwood was an early producer and distributor of stereoscopic and other photographic images, and later was a pioneer in the field of news-bureau photography. The company was founded in 1882 in Ottawa, Kansas by two brothers, Elmer Underwood (born Fulton County, Illinois 1859 - died St. Petersburg, Florida 1947) and Bert Elias Underwood (born in Oxford, Illinois 1862 - died Tucson, Arizona 1943). They moved to Baltimore and then to New York City in 1891. In 1920, the company sold most of its catalog of stereographs to the Keystone View Company. The company ceased business in the 1940s.

Copyright[edit]

The Library of Congress has some Underwood & Underwood images and they are are free of copyright. Getty Images has some Underwood & Underwood images and they claim they hold the copyright for those. Commons respects the rights of for-profit archives, so the burden of proof is higher for Getty Images pictures, they are considered unpublished until proven so. When the same image is held by the Library of Congress, or the Smithsonian; and Getty Images, we generally side with the rights of the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian to release the images into the public domain.
