English: The Portuguese coastal defence ship Vasco da Gama was launched in 1875 as an armoured corvette with heavy guns in a midship casemate. In 1902-1903 the ship was completely rebuilt at Ansaldo in Genua with not only new guns and boilers (and an extra funnel), but also a completely reshaped and lengtened hull. The resulting vessel had very little — apart from the name — in common with the original ship. Vasco da Gama was discarded in 1936.
