Inside the museum

The Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia "Leonardo da Vinci"', based in Milan, is the largest science and technology museum in Italy. Dedicated to Italian painter and scientist Leonardo da Vinci, the museum hosts many collections, both scientific and artistic. The national science museum works to enrich Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects with high-quality contents. Since March to May 2016, the museum hosts a Wikimedian in residence, Marco Chemello, thanks to an agreement with Wikimedia Italia.

We uploaded till now about 5.400 photos from the Museum collections.

From May 13 to June 2016 we uploaded about 5.400 photos from the Museum collections, shot by professional photographers, with a very detailed description for each image. The technical help is provided by Federico Leva from Wikimedia Italia.

Usage

• See the statistics for media files shared by the Museum within Wikimedia projects
  • During the first phase of the project (on May 13, 2016, before the mass uploading), the photos provided by the Museum and uploaded on Commons were 159; 80 of them were used (50.31%) 239 times in 18 different Wikimedia projects, in 17 languages.
  • As of 2016-05-20, the images were 207, and 114 of them (55%) were used in 322 different pages, in 20 different languages, with 956.000 extimated views in a month. See Final report of the WiR (2016-05-21) discussing results in detail.
  • As of 2016-06-18, the uploaded images were 5.402, and 176 of them (3.26%) were used in 426 different pages, in more then 20 different languages.

  • Before the beginning of this project (on March 10, 2016), the photos taken by the visitors of the museum and uploaded on Commons were 198, 84 used (42.42%) 188 times in 24 different Wikimedia projects, in 20 languages.

Details

• File names uploaded by the Musum should end with "Museo nazionale scienza e tecnologia Milano" (example: File:Locomotiva a vapore FS Gr 552 - 036 - Museo nazionale scienza e tecnologia Milano.jpg)
• Field "source" (or "institution") of every file should contain {{institution:Museoscienza}} as proper attribution.
