Summary[edit]

Description
English: This specimen appears to be a type of asphaltite - naturally solidified hydrocarbons. A couple famous asphaltite occurrences include gilsonite from Utah and shungite from Russia. Asphaltites are black, usually glassy-textured, low density (lightweight for their size), and often have conchoidal fracture.

This sample is called "raquirite" and is supposedly from Colombia, South America. Its appearance is consistent with Russian "elite" or "noble" shungite specimens. The only available information about raquirite appears to be New Age, healy-feely, woo woo. No specific locality in Colombia is disclosed by anyone (that's also sends up red flags). I'm skeptical that this is even from Colombia, let alone a South American asphaltite specimen. This may be an example of retail dealers assigning a fake name/locality to something to boost its perceived value, like "azeztulite" for quartz.

Locality: unrecorded, but attributed to Colombia [unverified]
