[edit]Description"White bronze" (zinc) tombstone, Forest Lawn Cemetery, Buffalo, New York - 20220520.jpg |
English: A "white bronze" tombstone stands near Delaware Avenue in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Buffalo, New York, as seen on a May 2022 afternoon. Enjoying a fairly brief period of popularity beginning in the 1870s and ending at the First World War, these markers - which, despite the name, are actually composed of a zinc alloy, cast into a mold and then sandblasted to mimic the rough matte finish of granite - were all sourced from one company, namely the Monumental Bronze Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The metal markers were touted as being more durable than stone and were especially popular among Civil War veterans, doubtless because of the custom-designed statues of soldiers marketed by the company as decorative add-ons. The tomb is that of Captain Charles H. Lane (1836-1902) - owner of several lakegoing freighters and once one of the most prominent mariners in Buffalo - along with his first wife Nettie (1847-1895) and infant son Louie (1885-1886), whose epitaph quotes Matthew 19:14: "suffer the little children to come unto me". |
