En 1636, le père Nicolas BRUCHET, prêtre dominicain, fit construire une chapelle en bois. L’église telle qu'on la connait actuellement a été construite en 1745 puis reconstruite en 1843 à la suite d'un séismes. Depuis, elle a subie deux séismes (1851 et 1853) et des cyclones dont celui de 1928 depuis sa reconstruction. L'agrandissement de l'église a été réalisé par l'architecte Ali Tur. Ces travaux ont fait l'objet d'une adjudication le 5 août 1931 pour 190 990 francs. A l'origine l'église comportait la nef seule et l'architecte a ajouté les deux bas-côtés et la sacristie. photo prise en 2018.
