Um Unterschied zu LESER wird in der hier vorliegenden Darstellung allerdings berücksichtigt, dass die Biozönose sowohl räumlichen als auch funktionalen Charakter besitzt. Denn Lebewesen befinden sich einerseits an einer bestimmten Stelle im Raum (und bewegen sich darin) und fungieren andererseits gleichzeitig als interagierende Systemeinheiten.
LESER andererseits unterteilt den Charakter von Lebewesen künstlich.
Für die räumliche Betrachtungsebene sieht er ausschließlich ihre räumliche Komponente. Diese nennt er 'Biotop' (Phytotop und Zootop) und meint damit ihren Aufenthaltsort (Wuchsort, Fundort) im Raum.
Für die funktionale Betrachtungsebene sieht er ausschließlich ihre funktionale Komponente. Diese nennt er 'Biosystem' (Phytozönose und Zoozonose) und meint damit ihre Wechselwirkungen untereinander.
