В состав показанного на рисунке аппарата помимо собственно вискозиметра Энглера входят также кольцевая горелка на штативе и мерный цилиндр вместимостью 50 куб. см. Сам вискозиметр состоит из играющего роль термостата металлического кожуха, заполняемого водой или маслом и снабжённого термометром и мешалкой, и закрытого крышкой латунного внутреннего сосуда. К округлой нижней части внутреннего резервуара присоединена платиновая трубка истечения (на рисунке не видна). Трубка истечения наглухо закрывается с помощью штепселя (пробки в виде палочки) из твёрдой древесины (на рисунке — высокий тёмный стержень между двумя термометрами). Вытекающая через трубку истечения при поднятом штепселе жидкость собирается в мерный сосуд. Размеры всех важнейших частей прибора, стандартизованы (см. ГОСТ 32058-2013 Битумы и битуминозные вяжущие. Определение удельной вязкости по Энглеру]). Вязкость исследуемой жидкости в градусах Энглера получают как отношение времени истечения 50 куб. см образца из вискозиметра Энглера при выбранной температуре ко времени истечения такого же объёма воды при температуре 25 °С. Для калибровки вискозиметра используют мерную колбу Кольрауша вместимостью 200 куб. см при 20 °С (время истечения 50 куб. см воды при температуре 25 °С равно, согласно ГОСТ 32058-2013, времени истечения 200 куб. см дистиллированной воды при 20 °С умноженному на 0,224).
