Summary[edit]

Description
English: The American lotus is native to Eastern North America, with a flowering period from June to July. Its predominant habitat is freshwater tidal marshes. The flowers of Nelumbo lutea are self-pollinating, meaning they do not require pollination for fruit formation. Native Americans baked the large tuberous lotus roots like sweet potatoes, consumed the leaves like spinach, and used the seeds as nuts or ground them into flour. Additionally, the plants are utilized in medicine to treat various ailments, including arthritis, rheumatism, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, heart failure, tuberculosis, and malaria.
