বাংলা: ইউরোপীয় স্থাপত্যের আদলে ঢাকার বুড়িগঙ্গার তীরে অবস্থিত একটি মনোরম অট্টালিকা রূপলাল হাউস। সৌন্দর্যে এটি একসময় আহসান মঞ্জিলের সঙ্গে পাল্লা দিত। বাংলাদেশ জাতীয় জাদুঘর থেকে প্রকাশিত আলোকচিত্রে সেকালের ঢাকা অ্যালবামে বুড়িগঙ্গার তীরের রূপলাল হাউসের একটি ছবি মিলল। জাতীয় জ্ঞানকোষ বাংলাপিডিয়ায় বলা হয়েছে, পুরান ঢাকার ফরাশগঞ্জের দুই বিত্তবান ভাই রূপলাল দাস ও রঘুনাথ দাস ১৮৪০ সালে আরাতুন নামের এক আর্মেনীয় ব্যবসায়ীর কাছ থেকে এই জায়গা কিনে কলকাতার মার্টিন কোম্পানির একজন স্থপতিকে নিযুক্ত করে রূপলাল হাউসের নির্মাণকাজ শেষ করেন। দ্বিতল প্রাসাদজুড়ে কারুকাজ, সামনে সুদৃশ্য নদী, সব মিলিয়ে এই অনন্য স্থাপনাটি দেখতে দেশ-বিদেশ থেকে অনেক মানুষ আসত। ইউরোপিয়ান নির্মাণ কৌশলে নির্মিত এই বাড়ির দৈর্ঘ্য ৯ হাজার ১৪৪ মিটার ও প্রস্থ ১ হাজার ৮৩০ মিটার। দোতলা বাড়িটির দুটি ব্লকে বিভিন্ন আকারের ৫০টি কক্ষ ছিল। ঠিক মাঝখানে কাঠের নৃত্য মঞ্চ। রূপলাল দাস অত্যন্ত সংগীতানুরাগী ছিলেন। রূপলাল হাউসে তিনি নিয়মিত সংগীতের আসর বসাতেন। এখানে আড়ম্বরপূর্ণ সাজে সজ্জিত একটি নাচঘর ছিল। ১৮৮৮ সালে ভারতের ভাইসরয় লর্ড ডাফরিনের ঢাকা সফরকালে তাঁর সম্মানে রূপলাল হাউসের নাচঘরে বল নাচের আয়োজন করেন রূপলাল। তবে অতীতের এসব ঐতিহ্য আজ শুধুই স্মৃতি। কেউ যদি বুড়িগঙ্গা তীরের ঢাকার ১১ নম্বর ফরাশগঞ্জ রোডের শ্যামবাজারে রূপলাল হাউসে যান, তিনি দেখবেন ভবনটির নাম লেখা হয়েছে জামাল হাউস। ভবনটির বিভিন্ন স্থানের দেয়াল ভেঙে পড়েছে। ভেতরে পেঁয়াজ-রসুনসহ মসলার কারবার।
এত কিছুর মধ্যেও কালের সাক্ষী হয়ে আছে রূপলাল হাউস।
