English: English name- Mesquite bean .

Botanical name - Prosopis juliflora(Sw.)DC. Other names inTamil – Velikathan (‘guard of fence’),Seemaik karuvai (‘foreign karuvai’),Karuvela maram (‘black vela tree’),Velik karuvai (‘fence karuvai’),Kattuk karuvela maram (‘forest black vela tree’). Hindi names - Angaraji babul , Vilayati babul . Generally in India ,It is considered as a weed ; Dries out land ;Sucks moisture from air ;Grows rapidly even in arid land ; Widely used to make charcoal ;Reddish–amber gum oozes out from stem ; Used in sand-dune stabilization in India ;In certain countries outside India, sugars,sweeteners and syrup are produced from the pods . தமிழ்: வேலிக் காத்தான், சீமைக் கருவை ,வேலிக் கருவை , காட்டுக் கருவேல மரம் என்ற பெயர்களால் இது அழைக்கப்படுகிறது;பெரும்பாலும் விறகுக்கே பயன்படுகிறது; விளைந்த மரத்திலிருந்து தேன் நிறத்தில் பிசின் வடியும் ; நிலத்தின் வளத்தைக் கெடுப்பதால் , இதனைக் களையாகக் (Weed)கருதுவர் ;கருவேல மரம் (Acacia nilotica) இதனினும் வேறானது;1950களில்தான் முதன்முதலாக இது இந்தியாவிற்குள் நுழைந்தது என்பர்; எனவே இது பழந்தமிழகத்து மரமல்ல.
