ആഫ്രിക്കൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലും ആസ്ത്രേലിയയിലും കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ബഓബാബ് വൃക്ഷം മഡഗാസ്ക്കറിന്റെ ദേശീയവൃക്ഷമാണ്. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഭരണകാലത്ത് കേരളത്തിൽ നട്ടുവളർത്തിയവയിൽ അവശേഷിച്ച കൂട്ടത്തിൽ ഒന്നാണ് തലശ്ശേരിയിൽ ഉള്ളത്. മരുപ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ വളരുന്ന ഈ സസ്യത്തിന്റെ തടിയിൽ ജലം ശേഖരിച്ചുവെക്കുന്നു. ഒരു ബഓബാബ് വൃക്ഷത്തിന് ചിലപ്പോൾ ഒരുലക്ഷം ലിറ്ററിൽ കൂടുതൽ വെള്ളം ഉൾക്കൊള്ളാനാവും.
English: Adansonia digitata Family: Malvaceae. Rare tree in the old bus stand area of Thalassery in Kannur district of Kerala. The baobab, found in Africa and Australia, is the national tree of Madagascar. Thalassery is one of the few surviving plantations in Kerala from the time of British rule. This tree, which grows in dry areas, stores water in its trunk. A baobab tree can sometimes hold more than one million liters of water. |
