说明：严家让上款。
此为张謇第四次赴京参与会试行程中所作信札，提及李鸿章、曾国荃、王先谦、易顺鼎（石甫）、张华奎（蔼卿）、何嗣焜（眉孙）、张光前（畏皇）、王欣甫、陆朗斋、孙云锦（孙师）、张詧等人，并谈到往来南京江宁书局、安徽淝西书院任教事，是张氏未中状元前生活的重要记录。
查《张謇日记》可知，此信应是作于光绪十五年正月三十日（即1889年3月1日）。信言“客秋叔兄入都，诸荷关爱”指张詧1888年秋赴北京住严礼卿处一事。《张謇日记》载，“二月八日，入都，与叔兄同寓礼卿宅（北半截胡同）”。又信中提到“叶礼丞昨没于旅顺军中”，查《日记》“二月二十二日，再与叔兄询（寄津）、曼君讯，说礼丞葬事”等，皆可推定此信写作日期。
作此信后不久，张氏即抵京住在严家，随即准备三月的会试。前三次均因考官认错试卷而落榜，此次系张氏第三次参与考试，深为“百感茫如矣”。
另信中提及严礼卿子婚期，并提议严氏寻一书院就职，以“稍资津润”，严礼卿与李鸿章同为光绪三年进士同榜，并言“此事合肥当能为力”。
作者简介：张謇（1853～1926），字季直，号啬翁，别署啬庵、处默、烟波钓叟，江苏南通人。光绪二十年状元，授翰林院修撰。擅书法，学颜、欧。中日甲午战争爆发，曾劾李鸿章妥协。后返里兴办实业。辛亥革命时期曾任南京临时政府实业总长、北京政府农商总长。

上款简介：严家让（1853～1929），字鸣谦，号礼卿，安徽含山人。同治帝师，光绪三年进士，与李鸿章同榜。任翰林院庶吉士，负责编修国史，后任朝议大夫，出人军机处、御书房等。
