Summary
English: Taiwan exhibits different biodiversity pattern and forest resources at different altitudes, among which the native cypress trees are the most precious. Cypress trees mainly grow in the mid-to-high-altitude Pacific coastal regions, such as Japan, and California and Alaska in the U.S. However, two species of cypress, Formosan hinoki and Formosan cypress, can only be found in Taiwan, where the Tropic of Cancer passes. Native cypress trees grow deep in the mountains of the island and are difficult to reach due to the rugged terrain, so these precious species were not documented until the late 19th century, when the Japanese first recorded and subsequently harvested them for timber. |
