English: In the Qing era, firearms were a popular item in the trade between Han and Indigenous communities. Indigenous people frequently bartered mountain resources and game in exchange of firearms for hunting and warfare. Starting in the 17th century, with the arrival of Dutch, Japanese, and Han Chinese in Taiwan, there was a noticeable influx of firearms into Indigenous societies. Beyond firearms, bladed weapons were also in high demand. Although the Qing government controlled the trade of ironware in Taiwan, the demand for ironware in local societies made smuggling of ironware into the island and its trade with Indigenous communities a common practice.
