Summary[edit]

Description
中文(臺灣):梨山文物陳列館外部一景
English: In 1918, the Spanish flu revaged the world and also caused many Atayal people to be infected and even die. The Atayal people believed that the disaster was caused by the invasion of foreigners, and to expel the Japanese and eliminate the disaster, they engaged in headhunting of their enemies to pay their respects to their ancestral spirits. The government took strong measures to control the situation, but it also spread to the area around the forestry tree farm in Basianshan. Conflicts broke out with the neoghbouring Atayal tribe, leading to the "Slamaw Incident" in which the tribesmen living in Lishan attacked a police post. This incident resulted in more than 20 casualties on both the Japanese side and the Atayal people, making it a rare large-scale conflict in Taiwan's forestry history. This incident caused the suspension of the construction of the Basianshan Forest Railway, and the development of the Basianshan forestry tree farm was halted for nearly three years (1920-1922).
