English: To this day, numerous Buddhist relics still exist in Shandong, China, among which Buddhist statues and cliff carvings of sutras are the most famous. Buddhist monks attached great importance to passing down of Buddhist scriptures. Based on "silk texts deteriorate, bamboo slips are short-lived, metal plates are hard to come by, and leather and paper are easily destroyed", the monk Andaoyi led a team to complete the engraving of many Buddhist sutras on the cliffs, thus ensuring the permanent preservation of the Buddhist teachings. The script used in the inscription is somewhat between the clerical and regular script, with characters of a large size that can be discerned from afar. Although none of the works by Andaoyi are recorded in historical records, later generation praised his calligraphy as the "ancestor of large characters" and "the forebearer of bangshu." Yang Shoujing remarked in "Records of Stele Criticism from the Jisu Feiqing Pavilion" that "the use of large characters in this inscriptions is the ultimate."
