Summary[edit]
English: By the Chou dynasty, the ting ceremonial cauldron had been used as sacrificial vessel showing class and status. This was even more true with the appearance of graded ting cauldrons. The term "graded cauldrons" usually refers to a set of cauldrons, similar in type and pattern but differ only in size. It is not certain when this ceremonial system was formalized, but it probably took shape after the middle or late Western Chou, approximately the 9th century B.C. Four sets of graded ting cauldrons were unearthed from this tomb. Each has nine, seven, five, and three ting cauldrons respectively. Since the owner of this tomb was not the Son of Heaven (or King of Chou), it was presumptuous of him to include nine ting cauldrons as accompanying burial objects as this was usually assumed as the king's exclusive right. This phenomenon, however, was quite common for the huge tombs of the Eastern Chou. |
