English: In 1745, Hakka individuals Chang Li, Chiu Chao Chin, and Ma Fu Chun arrived in Pulau Pinang by boat. They initially worked as fishermen and later engaged in tropical farming and trade. One day, Chang Li disappeared, and Chiu Chao Chin and Ma Fu Chun found him passed away in a sitting posture in a stone cave on Pulau Tikus. They buried him there and honor him as Da Bo Gong. In 1799, local Chinese erected a monument and built the Pinang Pulau Tikus Da Bo Gong Temple in his honor. In 1893, due to the large number of overseas Chinese residents in Pulau Pinang, the Qing Dynasty added the position of vice-consul. Then Consul-General in Singapore Huang Tsun Hsien was to find a candidate who fit three conditions: a person who was "among the local talents, impartial and honest, and had support from the gentry and merchants". In the end, Huang recommended Hakka person Cheong Fatt Tze to take the office. From 1893 to 1930, local Hakka business leaders served successively as Vice Consuls in Pulau Pinang, and the Hakka community, despite fewer in number, gradually gaining influence in the region. |
