Description
한국어: 조선 중기의 문신인 이원익은 1569년(선조 2년) 별시문과에 합격하여 관직에 오른 후 벼슬이 영의정에 이르고 청백리로 뽑히기도 하였으며 이후 원로 대신으로 벼슬에서 물러날 때 임금이 궤장(机杖)을 하사하였다. 이원익의 영정은 현재 세 본이 전하는데, 그 중 이 영정이 가장 이른 시기의 양식을 보여준다. 오른쪽 옆면에 단학흉배(單鶴胸背)가 붙어 있는 청색 단령(團領: 깃이 둥근 공복)을 입고 호랑이 가죽을 깐 교의자(交椅子)에 앉은 전신교의좌상으로서, 오른손은 부채를 쥐고 왼손은 관대를 잡고 있는 특이한 자세를 취하고 있다. 그림의 특징으로 볼 때 이원익이 1573년 성절사의 질정관이 되어 명(明)나라에 다녀올 때 그린 영정으로 생각된다. 음영처리나 손을 드러낸 자세, 호랑이 가죽을 깐 의자 같은 것들이 그 당시 조선 중기의 초상화 양식이나 화법과 많이 다르기 때문이다. 즉, 이 초상은 얼굴처리에 있어서 음영 표현이 시도되었고, 수염·눈썹·뺨 등도 담묵으로 그린 뒤 검은 먹선으로 다시 처리하였다. 그리고 눈은 금가루를 써서 채색한 듯 눈동자 주위에 이금색이 보이며, 손의 표현은 농암 이현보영정(聾巖李賢輔影幀, 보물 제872호)과 비슷한 면이 있지만 기법은 다소 미숙한 편이다.
