고려 초기에 세워진 9층 석탑이다. 부근에 백곡사(白谷寺)라는 절이 있었다고 전하지만 탑 이외에 절이 있었다는 흔적은 현재 찾을 수 없다. 탑은 사각형의 2층 기단(基壇) 위해 세웠는데 아래 기단의 네 면에는 2개씩의 안상(眼象) 조각이 있고, 위의 기단에는 모서리 기둥과 버팀목을 새겼다. 몸돌과 지붕돌은 각각의 돌을 사용하였으며 지붕돌은 완만하게 작아지는 비율을 가졌고 끝에는 풍경(風磬)을 달았던 구멍이 남아있다. 1층의 지붕돌받침은 5단이지만 2층 이상은 3단으로 되어 있으며, 상륜부(相輪部)는 모두 사라졌다. 전체적으로 보아 지붕돌이 앎으며 층수가 9층이라는 점에서 안정감이 떨어지지만, 신라 석탑의 양식을 따르고 있고 상하의 비례(比例)가 아름답게 조성되는 등 신라 말기와 고려 초기의 석탑 양식을 이해하는데 귀중한 자료이다.
