[Portrait of Margaret Jones Burleigh] [Philadelphia, Pa.] : [Broadbent & Phillips], [between 1868 and 1875] 1 photograph : albumen print on card mount, hand-colored ; mount 10 x 6 cm (carte de visite format) Notes: Photograph shows Margaret Jones Burleigh (1817-1891), abolitionist and teacher from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She taught Emily Howland at Mary Grew's School for Young Women in Philadelphia and was a friend and mentor to Howland. She was married to abolitionist Cyrus Burleigh (1820-1855) and both served on the executive committee of the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society. Title devised by Library staff. Date based on years Henry C. Phillips (1843-1911) and Samuel Broadbent (1810-1881) formed a partnership working under the name of Broadbent & Phillips at 1206 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. "M. J. Burleigh" written across bottom of photograph. DLC "No. 20949"--below photographer's backmark on back of card. DLC Photograph is housed in an album. Album page has decorative gold borders framing the print. DLC "Broadbent & Phillips"-written on bottom of album page.
