Description
English: The object in the foreground on which the protagonist's hand rests, mistaken for a stone, had led to the recognition of the man as the biblical hero Samson, forced to turn a millstone after his capture. The reflectographic investigations and the last restoration, however, allow us to see this object as an upside-down string musical instrument and to identify the painting with the "Three great singing heads" listed as being by Giorgione in Gabriele Vendramin's inventory.
