English: CWGC gravestone for Private William Thirst, age 30, of the Royal Sussex Regiment in the churchyard of the parish church of St Margaret of Antioch in the parish of Suffield, Norfolk, England. William Thirst was the son of James and Mary Thirst of Suffield. William was one of three brothers who served their country in the First World War. He joined up on the 11 December 1915 and became a stretcher bearer in the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment. On the 18 September he was badly injured whilst carrying out his duties as a stretcher bearer during heavy fighting around the Saint Quentin Canal. He died from his wounds on 4 October 1918. William was posthumously awarded the Military Medal for Bravery in the Field on June 17, 1919. Williams brother John was also killed in action near Arras on the 4 April 1917. John and William Thirst’s names are recorded on the war memorial in the churchyard at Suffield, and all three brothers who fought are recorded on the Roll of Honour inside the church. |
