Description
English: Church of Saint Margaret of Antioch, Suffield, Norfolk, mural monument to Rev. James Clough (1646-1713), for 28 years Rector of Suffield. Inscribed in Latin: Hic sub spe beatae resurrectionis laetam Domi(ni) Jesu epiphanium praestolatur Jacobus Clough huius ecclesiae rector in praedicando sedulus indicendo solers in agendo sagax et demerendo promptus. Ducis reliquit filias Aliciam uxorem Gulielmi Durrant de Suffield Armigeri et Rosam quae devinctae pietatis ergo maerens monumentum posuit. Decessit anno: salutis MDCCXIIIo (millensimo septingentensimo tertio decimo); curae pastoralis XXVIIIo (vicensimo octavo); Calendas Decembris; aetatis LXVIIo (sexagensimo septimo) ("Here under the hope of a blessed resurrection James Clough, Rector of this church, awaits the joyful Epiphany of Lord Jesus; in preaching, diligent; in speaking, skilful; in acting, wise; and in obliging, early. By his marriage he left daughters: Alice, the wife of William Durrant, Esquire, of Suffield, and Rose, who conquered by piety therefore mourning, he placed this monument. He died in the year - of Salvation the 1,713th- of pastoral care the 28th - the Calends of December - of his age the 67th").

His daughter Alice Clough married William Durrant of Suffield, Norfolk, by whom she had a daughter and heiress Alice Durrant (1716-1743), first wife of Isaac Preston (1710-1768) of Beeston St Lawrence, Norfolk. Arms: Gules, three pineapples (slipped) argent (Clough) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.206 "Clough of Minsterly, Yorkshire (sic)" - apparently meaning Minsterley Hall, Minsterley, Shropshire, built in 1581 by Robert Clough[1]) impaling: Quarterly of ... and ...., on a bend three fusils (for his wife, family not stated; possibly Harmer, see arms of William Harmer (d.1710) on his ledger stone in Saint Nicholas Church, Swafield, Norfolk File:-2021-12-31 Ledger stone, Saint Nicholas Church, Swafield.JPG). Of the Clough family of Minsterley, Shropshire, the names of the first five generations are given in Marl.MS.1396,fo.69 1241, fo.68, where the arms are given as: Gules, three pine-apples slipped argent a martlet for difference (source: http://www.cluett.org.uk/anjou.html)
