Description
English: A stone wall memorial plaque for James Shuckburgh Carter who was a captain in the Grenadier Guards who was killed in action at the Battle of Canal du Nord, in France. James was 37 and died on the 27 September 1918 whilst nearing Flesquieres, the enemy's machine-gun fire from the direction of Graincourt became very heavy, and Captain James Carter was killed, being hit in the head. In the past James Carter had also been a Blue for Cambridge University rowing team and was number 5 on Cambridge's 1903 winning crew in The Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge. His memorial is on the wall of Saint Mary’s parish church, Northrepps, Norfolk.
