Description
Afrikaans: Die Victoria-teleskoop (ook McClean-teleskoop) bestaan uit vier teleskope op dieselde voetstuk, insluitend 'n 18- (vir sigbare lig) en 24-duim (vir blou lig) refraktor, almal gebou deur Howard Grubb van Dublin. Die Victoria-koepel en laboratoriumgebou is deur sir Herbert Baker ontwerp, en die koepel is in 1896 voltooi. Die Victoria-teleskoop is deur mnr. Frank McClean (1837–1904) van Rusthall naby Tunbridge Wells, Engeland, aan die sterrewag geskenk, vir gebruik deur sy medewerker David Gill. Dit is tans 'n museum en besoekersentrum en staan by die Koninklike Sterrewag aan die Kaap die Goeie Hoop wat reeds in 1820 deur die Engelse Admiraliteit gestig is, en sedert 1972 by die Suid-Afrikaanse Astronomiese Observatorium ingelyf is.[1][2]
English: The Victoria telescope (also McClean telescope) consists of four telescopes on the same mount, including an 18-inch (for visible light) and 24-inch (for blue light) refractor, all built by Howard Grubb of Dublin. The Victoria dome and laboratory building were designed by sir Herbert Baker, and the dome was completed in 1896. The Victoria telescope was donated to the Royal Observatory by Frank McClean FRS (1837–1904) of Rusthall near Tunbridge Wells, England, for use by his colleague David Gill. It is currently a museum and visitor center and stands at the Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope, which since 1972 has been amalgamated with the South African Astronomical Observatory.[3][4]
