Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Ukhimath temple, often called as the Omkareshwar temple of Uttarakhand, is the winter home of the Shiva iconography of two Panch Kedar temples – Kedarnath temple and Madhyamaheshwar temple.

Ukhimath temple is named after its village. In historic texts, the village is called Ushamath after Usha, the daughter of Banasur. According to Hindu legends, it is here that Usha married Aniruddha – a descendent of Krishna, and received the blessings of Shiva. The site was a major Hindu monasteries complex in central Himalayas, and thus the village came to be called Usha–matha, which over time came to be termed Ukhimath.

The Ukhimath temple is a Nagara-style square plan stone temple with a mahamandapa and antarala. The complex is pre-9th century and attributed to Katyuri dynasty. The temple complex includes shrines for Parvati, Mandhata, Aniruddha, Ganesha, Chandika and Vishnu.
