Description

Back to the Great Western mainline at Twyford. Seen here are a pair of class 166 3-car sets on 2P47, 11:34 Oxford to London Paddington on 5 November 2017 both sporting the First Great Western "Barbie" livery. Leading is set 166201 with 166202 behind.

With electrification of Great Western mainline falling behind time and over budget, at the time of this visit, local FGW services west of Maidenhead are still in the hands of DMUs. Likewise electrification of the Henley branch was started but with no plans for completion.

21 of these 3-car sets built by ABB in York from 1992 to replace ageing diesel mechanical units based at Reading depot. Their duties take them as far west as Hereford and Bedwyn as well as the North Downs line through to Redhill and Gatwick Airport.
