Summary[edit]
Description09-89 hamer Hellevoetsluis Langeweg Romeinse tijd 1983-1984.jpg |
English: Drawing of a hammer from Roman times found during an excavation in C.E.1983 & 1984 in Hellevoetsluis near the Langeweg (between Nieuwenhoorn and Tinte). It was found in one of four but four & virtually superimposed farms, which were built with poles, wickerwork & huttelema. The age of the farms is determined by means of dendrochronology: a dating method based on the annual rings of the wood. From old to young the dates are: 57, 63, 84 and C.E.107. The walls of the four, largely superimposed, farms consisted of piles along which braid was placed. The braid walls have probably been smeared with manure. Each farm had one or two fireplace places. Various wood structures prevented the farm from sagging into the slack surface. This wooden hammer may have been used for this, which was found in the elevation layers during the excavation. The hammer is made from one piece of essehout. The face shows traces of intensive use.
BOORvindplaatscode 09-89. |
