| Description |
Viewed from the Ringway pedestrian bridge, this Preston icon was opened on 12th October 1969. At that time with 80 bus stands (40 on each side) it was the biggest bus station in Britain - some say in Europe. This is topped by a staggered five floor car park. During the early part of this century Preston Council planned to demolish the bus station. Following a survey by the Save Preston Bus Station campaign it was found that 80% of Preston people wanted it to stay. In December 2012 Preston Council announced that demolition would go ahead. After two previous failed listed building applications by the Twentieth Century Society, Grade II Listed Building status was finally granted in 2013. After refurbishment the bus station was officially re-opened in 2018. Stands 1 - 40 on the West side were closed and a pedestrian zone was created. Bus stands 41 - 80 on the East side were re-numbered 1 - 39 and can accommodate boarding and alighting with low floor buses. On the South side is a Coach Station where the taxi rank was formerly situated. |
