Summary
[edit]Description11859 - Vatican - Pius-Clementine Museum (3482088081).jpg |
English: “Belvedere Torso”, sitting on a panther skin. 1st century BCE (?). Marble, H. 1.59 m. This colossal fragment bears numerous traces of repairs carried out in antiquity. Old interpretation: it would be "Ajax" after the bronze, H. 29 cm., from the George Ortiz collection: [3]. Other interpretations, more plausible, based on ancient themes: Achilles playing the cythera (this motif exists in the form of an intaglio in the Department of Coins, Medals and Antiquities, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Paris: [4]) or it would be Heracles drunk (Heracles beating Auge, bas-relief). Auge is the daughter of the king of Tegea, Aléos ; she would have conceived Telephus because of this rape. Reference: François Queyrel, 2016, p. 274. Vatican Pio Clementino Museum. |
