| Description | This building at Republic Street and 12th Street in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood was constructed in 1880 as a mixed-use building, originally a boarding house on the upper floors and retail in the ground-floor storefronts. In the 1890s, the building became the Stross Hotel, and was damaged in a 1900 fire, which is what probably led to the building's current mixed-style appearance, and then became the Republic Hotel during the 1920s. The building's mid-20th Century history is unclear, though it appears to have been unused on the upper floors at that point in time. In the late 1980s, it was purchased by Tender Mercies, who operate it as a home for those with disabilities, and they have kept good care of the building, with a renovation in 2007-09 lending the building its current, refreshed appearance that looks very close to how it did when it was operating as the Stross Hotel. |
