Alan Corey, close-in weapons system (CIWS) test director, explains to Rear Adm. Matthew Klunder, chief of naval research, how targets tracked with the Phalanx CIWS can be easily handed over to the Laser Weapons System (LaWS) targeting and tracking system during a tour of the Naval Directed Energy Center. The Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) directed energy team is currently performing integration tests on the Potomac River Test Range in preparation for the solid-state laser's deployment aboard the Afloat Forward Staging Base (Interim) USS Ponce (AFSB(I)15) in the summer of 2014.
