Summary[edit]

Description

Having been withdrawn in 1979, 84008 sat at Crewe Works until 1988 before cutting up. This view was taken on 16 May 1982.

10 of these locos were built for the West Coast Main Line electrification in the early 1960s with orders being given to different manufacturers for the first 10. The Glasgow-based North British Locomotive Company took the order for the AM4s which were used mainly for passenger traffic. However they experience technical problems and by 1967 they were placed into storage despite having all been extensively repaired. Following rebuilding they returned to traffic in the early 1970s

as class 84s under the TOPS numbering system. Once again problems occurred and they were progressively withdrawn between 1977 and 1980.
