Summary[edit]

Description
English: Located in the hills of the Thüringa region of Germany is a 2.6km long line from Lichtenhain a d Bergbahn to Cursdorf. Unusual in so far that it is connected to the rest of the mainline network by the fanicular line from Obstfelderschmiede. Both this line and the fanicular are known as the Oberweißbacher Bergbahn.

As such the line to Cursdorf has always been electrified since opening in 1923. In 1981, the voltage was stepped up to 600V dc and 3 new railcars were constructed by RAW at the same time. The numbering of these were not consecutive and fitted around other railcars in the fleet. One of these examples seen here, 479.205 at Cursdorf on 17 May 1993 on train 15068,11:10 Cursdorf to Lichtenhain.

Due to the line being isolated, a small maintenance shed is provided at Lichtenhain and a special carrier is provided on the funicular line to transport railcars to the DB line at Obstfelderschmiede. As of late 2011, the system is still operated by Deutsche Bahn AG throughout the year with funding from the region.
