Summary
[edit]Description1800 I Street NW - International Square - Washington DC - southeastern entrance.JPG |
English: Looking northwest at the southeast corner entrance of 1800 I Street NW in Washington, D.C., in the United States. Also known as International Square, this building originally occupied just the eastern half of the block (between 18th and 19th Streets NW, between I and K Streets NW). An 11-story, Modernist building was completed in November 1976. A second building on the southwest corner of the block opened in 1979 (not pictured), and a third building (not pictured) opened on the northwest corner of the block in 1980. All three buildings were designed by architect Vlastimil Koubek and constructed to appear as if they were a single structure, and they are now linked internally to be so.
International Square also features a vertically inverted series of setbacks on the southeast and northwest corners, which indicate the main entrances to the building and its interior atrium. The southeast inverted setbacks are visible in this image. One of the entrances to the Farragut West Metro station (part of the the city's subway) is beneath this corner of the building. The ground floor was set back about 50 feet (15.25 metres) to accommodate the escalators down to the subway station. The ground floor arcade which forms the first floor of International Square can be seen at bottom left. |
