18 June 1815 – Victory at Waterloo – Draped Bust of Lord Wellington

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Marble bust of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, in Room 9 ►(File:18 June 1815 – Victory at Waterloo – The Waterloo Despatch, 2021.jpg) of the Wellington Museum, Waterloo : the serene confidence of the Freedom Fighter who restored in Europe the peace that Napoleone Buonaparte (1769-1821) had disrupted for about 20 years.

The June 18th 1815 Battle of Waterloo crowned Lord Wellington's prestigious military career in Europe.
The Road to Victory had been long and tortuous, having started with the August 21st 1808 Victory of Vimeiro (Portugal) ►(File:Vimeiro – Padrão Comemorativo da Batalha do Vimeiro – 1808 - 1908.jpg), simultaneous to the July 19th 1808 Victory of Bailén (Andalusia, Spain) ►(File:Bailén, Monument to the Victory of 1808.JPG).
Both these Victories were not the end, not even the beginning of the end, but a hope for the end of the beginning [of the napoléonic wars and conscriptions and deaths and lootings and destructions], and clearly perceived as such from Lisbon to Moscow – all the more as, since Aboukir Bay (3 August 1798) and Trafalgar (21 October 1805), N. Buonaparte had no fleet anymore.

The sculptor has rendered that sense of accomplishment and humanity which best describes Lord Wellington, here captured at the summit of his life.
