18 June 1815 – Waterloo – Wellington Museum, Arthur R. Heyland, former tomb, now cenotaph.

Summary[edit]

Description

"SACRED // to the memory of // Major Arthur Rowley Heyland // of His Britannick Majesty's // Fortieth Regiment of Foot, //Who was buried on this spot. //
He fell gloriously in the Battle of // WATERLOO // on the 18th of June 1815 // at the moment of Victory // and in command of the Regiment // agen 34 Years." (sic)
(Tarlier & Wauters, 1864)

The grave, built by his Regiment, was surrounded and protected by iron railings put in place by his wife, Mary Kyffin (1779-1858). Major Heyland's son, then grandson having annually paid the landowner and their heirs for its upkeep, the tomb was rather well maintained as several 19th c. etchings attest, e.g. ►([1]). Also, a 1893 article described it as shaded by a lilac tree and surrounded by purple pansies and jasmine.

End of October 1962, the buildings around the age-old cross-road of Mont-Saint-Jean gave way to the indispensable redesign of the major axis of circulation towards and around Brussels. Major Arthur Rowley Heyland's tomb was saved and is now in the backyard of the Wellington Museum, Waterloo (shown) – but his remains are lost, although a suitable place would have been the 1890 British Monument and Vault in the Cemetery of Brussels.

The information board reproduces the text of the epitaph. The portrait of Major Heyland could do with a better presentation.
