18 June 1815 – Waterloo – Wellington Museum, Richard FitzGerald, tomb's fragment

Summary[edit]

Description
English: First comprehensive description of Lieutenant Colonel Richard FitzGerald's tomb (1774-1815) when still in the former cemetery of Waterloo : Une pierre tumulaire, entourée d'une grille de fer, porte ces mots :

"D. O. M. | Sacred to the memory of lieutenant | colonel Richard Gerald of the 2 regimend | life guards of his Britannic Maiesty whorel | gloriously at the Battle of la belle Alliance | near this town on the 18 June 1845 in the 41 | year of his life deeply and deservedly regretted | by his family and friends to a manly loftiness | of soul he united ail the virtues that | could render him an ornament to his | profession and to private and social live."
"Aux mânes du plus vertueux des | hommes généralement estimé et regretté | de sa famille et de ses amis le lieutenant | colonel Fitzgeneral de la garde | du corps de Sa Majesté Britanique tué | glorieusement à la bataille de la | Belle Alliance !e 18 juin 1815. | R. I. P."
(Tarlier & Wauters, 1864)
(sic). Tarlier and Wauters are very reliable in their quotations, and the spelling mistakes hint to a locally written slab without supervision.

The cemetery was enlarged a few times until the creation of a larger one in the 1930s, where the local graves were moved. The British graves were saved and, along with fragments of tablets, are now in the backyard of the Wellington Museum ► (File:18 June 1815 – Victory at Waterloo – Duke of Wellington's Headquarter.jpg) created in 1955 and enlarged step by step up to the mid-1980's (so far).
Only this fragment (shown) of Lieutenant Colonel Richard FitzGerald has survived, now on the wall of the passageway leading to the backyard. The small information board reproduces the legible part of the inscription.

In Saint Joseph's church ►(File:18 June 1815 – Waterloo – Saint Joseph's Church.jpg) across the street, a tablet to his name : ►(File:18 June 1815 – Waterloo – St Joseph's Church, Tablet Right, 12.jpg) provided by his sister.
