[edit]Description18th-century Rao Lakhpat Monuments and Chhatris, Bhuj Gujarat 048.jpg |
English: The Rao Lakhpat monuments and chhatris are 18th-century funerary monuments marking the cremation of Jadeja rulers near Hamirsar lake in Bhuj, western Gujarat. These structures were built by the Raos of Kutchchh, and a style of Hindu cenotaphs built in an era after the collapse of the Mughal empire and the start of the British colonial era.
The monuments are intricately carved with Hindu artwork that includes reverent depiction of Hindu gods and goddesses, as well as cultural scenes, regional fauna and flora. The largest monument is for the eponymous Rao Lakhpati cenotaph. The site also includes Sati stones from this period. The monuments were built from regional red sandstone. The architecture is a fusion of Hindu and 18th-century Islamic architecture elements as developed by Gujarati artisans in this period. |
