Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Rittersville Hotel - Allentown PA

The Manhattan Hotel was a two and one-half story structure, converted from a frame home. It was located at Club and Hanover avenues in Allentown, across from the entrance to Central Park.

It was formerly called the Rittersville Hotel before it was remodeled in 1888. Owned at first by George Weldner, he sold it to the Allentown and Bethlehem Rapid Traction Company in 1894. The traction company improved the property after it was purchaced.

The hotel burned in 1898 when a monkey kept as pet by the hotel owner started a fire. It was replaced by another Manhatten Hotel that was torn down in 1921 to make room for the Manhatten Auditorium, later known as the Empire Ballroom.
