Summary[edit]

Description

In 1938 three railway guns were built using the 305mm (12inch) guns from the sunken battleship “Imperatritsa Mariya”. This had been lost to a magazine explosion in Sevastopol harbour in October 1916. They were used in the 1939-1940 Soviet-Finnish war and in late 1941 they took part in the defence of the Soviet naval base on Finland's Hanko peninsula. Disabled by the Soviets when the base was evacuated, they were later restored by Finnish specialists using guns from the withdrawn Russian battleship “Imperator Aleksandr III”. After the war they were handed over to the Soviet Union, who maintained them in operational condition until 1991. On display in ‘Victory Park’, Museum of the Great Patriotic War, Poklonnaya Hill, Moscow, Russia.
