BMC's small car was the Mini, the Mk I was built from 1959-67 in the UK, 1960-67 in NZ and 1961-70 in Australia. The Mini featured an 848cc transversely mounted engine, front wheel drive, ten inch wheels and independent suspension. Mk I Minis had sliding side windows and external door hinges. The Mini Cooper introduced in 1961, was the creation of John Cooper, who saw the potential to design a motorsports version of the car. Under the bonnet the car featured a racing-tuned 997cc engine, twin SU carburettors, a closer-ratio gearbox and front disc brakes. Identified outside with the Super Deluxe overriders plus chrome trim around the windows. The further improved 1963 Cooper S got the larger 1071cc tuned engine, (1275cc in 1964) race suspension and better brakes.

In 1966 the Buckle Mini Monaco was born, converted from a standard Australian built Mini Cooper S. the roof was replaced with a lower, sleeker, fibreglass version. Between 20-30 were converted over 2 years.
